Sharjah Grand Prix 2009 kicks off

SHARJAH: The Sharjah Grand Prix 2009 Championship kicks off today (10th December 2009) at the Sharjah Khalid Lagoon. The two-day event branded as ‘the mother of the races’ was organized by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA). Participants were drawn from across the globe including -American Jay Price, UAE Thani Al Qamzi, Finish Sami Seilo, Italian Swedish Jonas Andersson and Italian Mariano C.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday 9th 2009, Al Norman, the SCTDA director, said the long-awaited event will produce the world champion. “This is going to be the mother of all the races, with five big drivers participating in the championship. It is going to be a unique event that will place Sharjar in the global sporting map. The event is aimed at showcasing the city. Over the last nine years, Sharjah has come to be recognized as an outstanding host for the F1 World Championships and this success is just one step in our mission to promote the city as a leading global tourism and cultural destination,” Al Norman said, expressing his excitement at Sharjah’s hosting of the event for the tenth consecutive year.

Al Norman stated that the event has made the whole world look at the Emirate with respect. He pledged to put smile on the faces of everyone that graced the prestigious event. “We are committed to placing Sharjah in a leading position locally, regionally and internationally as a world-class destination that whole world watches,” he said.

The F1 promoter, Nicolo Di San Germano, explained the role of sport and F1 World Powerboat Championship in strengthening cultural and social bonds between different people and removing underlying differences. “Using sports as a universal language removes difference between people and encourages love, amity and cooperation,” he said, expressing his confidence on Sharjah’s exceptional ability. He said that the F1 World Championship contestants consider Sharjah and the waters of Khalid Lagoon their favorite.

Sharjar Grand Prix 2009 is part of the Sharjar-Etisalat Water Festival, an international event that combines all types of entertainment and leisure activities for all family members. The Grand Prix-UIM Formula 1 Power Boat Championship is the most eminent sporting event that is organized in the Gulf region annually. “It attracts the world to Sharjah. The F1 Power Boat Championship is the most awesome and high profile event that gives the Sharjar-Etisalat Water Festival a spectacular international dimension, generating worldwide coverage and exposure,” Al Norman concluded.
